Open spacious lawn areas encircled and defined by regular plantings of mainly elm trees present an uncluttered and peaceful setting that is enjoyed and admired by the residents of Collingwood, Clifton Hill and North Fitzroy.

This passive parkland contrasts with the more robust, active recreation zones along Merri Creek in East Clifton Hill.

We, the undersigned residents of Collingwood, Clifton Hill, North Fitzroy and elsewhere, request Yarra City Council to preserve the current tranquil character of Darling Gardens and, in particular, delete the following from its Draft Masterplan (which will save over $500,000):

1) Running track/circular path (saving $135,000).

2) Proposed young and older children's playground enclaves on the south side of the park (saving $320,000). If new play facilities are required upgrade the existing facility - which has been a children's play area for over 50 years - but avoid 'fencing in' the equipment.

3) Exercise equipment stations (saving $48,000).

We also request that the design for the new toilet block be advertised for public comment before a final decision is taken.
