This petition is in response to the possibility of our electoral system being changes from a locally accountable and locally empowered first-past-the-post system towards a shabby, weak and less local proportional representation.

This is an open statement to the main political parties and to the public for those who care about local democracy, who believe in keeping a strong, open and connecting relationship and bond with our MP's through local representation via. constituency.

This statement is also in responses to the reaction by demonstration made outside the libdem headquarters calling for PR.

We feel that it is wrong for the Liberal Democrats to hold our connection with our local MP to ransom and our government to ransom by putting on offer electoral reform through proportional representation which will taint that relationship and local representation that we have with our local MP by abolishing first-past-the-post is wrong.

It will destroy the local fabric of our voting system by reducing putting a X on a paper for a local candidate, a individual, a local hero, a human being, a person with a strong connection and 'obligation' to his constituency by creating an all party list in our voting system.

The people's candidate will become the party's candidate, an MP with an individual mind will become the party whips mind, a MP that will vote on the local voters behalf will make a decision on the party's behalf.

It would tear up everything that a MP will have his local community and water down his duty, obligation, responsibility to speak on his local constituency’s behalf.

Instead of empowering our democracy, it would belittle our democracy and dum down our democracy and take away local voices. People will be have their local democracy robbed off them.

MP's will become isolated and disillusioned with their constituents. MP's will be selected for them through a candidate and party list rather than being elected by his constituents with possibility of that new MP having no local history, experience or connection with the constituents.

Instead of making democracy and open government better, it would make it worse, more closed, more isolated, less accountable and disillusioned. Corruption would get worse not less as people will have less empowerment to vote out their corrupt MP and the strong party machines will keep them in.

MP's will become more political and tribal and think on the Party's behalf instead of it's constituents. It will create an even worse 'them and us' situation.

So we ask now, that for no reason at all can we see our local democracy being robbed, our local empowerment being destroyed, our connection with our MP being dismantled, the closed politics becoming common place and government become less open more closed, less decisive more indecisive, less accountable and more held to ransom.

We ask to not abolish fist-past-the-post, rather, reform it.
