We, the NVCC nursing class of 2015, are petitioning you to re-evaluate your decision to cancel our very unique, very intimate, and symbolic nursing pinning ceremony, which has been scheduled for May 11, 2015, at 7pm. We have worked very hard to get to this point, and there has been a great deal of work involved from NSA and students to plan this ceremony in advance. To make a change so significant as you have proposed is unreasonable, given that there are only seven weeks until graduation.

We have made arrangements for family travel and accommodations in advance, some of which cannot be refunded (i.e., plane tickets and hotel reservations). There are military families who have purposely scheduled their departures to be at the pinning ceremony so they can be there to celebrate with their loved ones. These are only two examples of the immeasurable plans, sacrifices, and solemn regard that we students have made and invested in ourselves, the program and our futures.

The nursing pinning ceremony is steeped in a rich history dating back to Crusades of the 12th century, as well as the outstanding selfless contributions of Florence Nightingale, the iconic symbol of nursing. The pinning ceremony is often more personally meaningful than the graduation, because it signifies our official initiation into the prestigious brotherhood and sisterhood of nurses.

We, the undersigned, call on Provost Anne Loochtan, Dr. Amy McGowan, Dr. Mel Schiavelli, Patty King, and all those who are responsible for this decision, to reinstate the official pinning ceremony to its originally scheduled date and time, May 11, 7pm, for the graduates of the nursing program of NVCC, class of 2015.
