As of 1st July 2008 new shop trading laws came into effect. These laws allow store trading in tourist area to open up on boxing day but at restricted hours and other stores out side of tourist area have to remain closed.
But provisions in the act allow retailers to apply for an exemption so they can open up on boxing if there outside of tourist area. This is what Woolworths have done and Coles as well. These provision also allow trading on Easter Sunday as well.

The Retail workers of NSW demand that the NSW Government amend the current shop trading Laws that prevent retail companies from trading Boxing Day. We deserve the right to enjoy boxing day with friends and family.
