The introduction of the National Identity Register is, quite frankly, an Orwellian move from our Government, surprising to say the least.

It proposes issuing chipped ID cards that will contain, among other supposedly 'confidential' details, facial scans and fingerprint details.

For one, the estimated cost of this scheme is around £18 billion, money that could be put to a much better use, such as solving the current financial crisis perhaps? Or perhaps to finance a greater police force that will fight terrorism (as the Govt. claims ID cards will do) much better than keeping tabs on ordinary people.

Another painfully obvious problem is the fact that Identity Theft would become a lot easier and increase rapidly, all your personal details being kept on a single card on your person.

You don't believe what I just wrote? Look it up. Google it. Google the NIR and the Communications Data Bill. None of this would happen in any normal free society.

We have a duty as UK citizens to hold our government accountable. We need to make as much noise as possible with relation to this. It cannot be ignored any longer.

We, the undersigned, put forward the notion that both the National Identity Register and the Communications Data Bill be removed from proposed government legislation entirely, or, at the very least, be revised to the extent that they endanger neither the civil liberties or privacy of ordinary working people within the United Kingdom.
