Both my children have been born with a rare genetic condition which affects their growth and development. My eldest was removed from my care as it was thought I was neglecting her, after which a doctor spotted that she had the soft signs of an underlining genetic condition.
At which point she was tested and it turned out she had part of the short arm of chromosome two missing, and it made me think how many parents go through the trauma of loosing a child to the care system due to a lack of knowledge of medical conditions or even have a child die because of a lack of knowledge.
I have this genetic condition but the effect of it is so mild that it would be hard to spot, so i believe having a broad spectrum test would save so much heartache and the best medicine is not always a cure but a way to manage it with a proper care plan for these children.
We, the undersigned, want our government to offer a broad spectrum test on chromosomes to determine if our newborn children have any hidden genetic conditions that may mean that a child needs extra care, or help to have a good quality of life.
