With an economic recession gripping the province, Alberta faces a record deficit of $6.1 billion for fiscal 2015-2016 and years of future deficits, adding tens of billions of taxpayer supported debt.

Despite this grim reality, total public sector compensation is slated to rise by nearly $2.2 billion between the 2014 and 2017 budget years.

Some increase is built into existing contracts, but many contracts are up for negotiation within the time frame. As one collective bargaining agreement often sets expectations for others, Alberta has an opportunity to negotiate aggressively to contain the debt that will burden future generations.

As a citizen of Alberta, I expect the provincial government to negotiate aggressively with the Alberta Teachers' Association as collective agreements come up for renewal in 2016.

This will set the pace for subsequent negotiations with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, Health Sciences Association of Alberta and the United Nurses of Alberta.
