Malaysia

We, the undersigned call on the Department of Fisheries, Terrengganu, Malaysia to immediately gazette the Kalong beach on Redang Island, Kuala Terrengganu.

Every year, turtles return to this beach to lay their eggs, only for it to be stolen by poachers who steal the eggs to be sold openly at the local market.

Poachers openly steal the eggs even as the turtles lay their eggs, leaving it to bury only sand. Turtles travel thousands of miles each year to return to the beach they were born in, to lay their eggs, often going through a dangerous and hazardous journey in the sea. Tears can be seen from their eyes as they lay their eggs.

Sadly, thieves openly steal the eggs as this beach was never gazetted as a protected area.

We call on the Department of Fisheries Malaysia to take immediate action and gazette this beach as protected so that we can put a stop to this open thievery immediately. Gazetting this beach as a protected beach means keeping our turtles safe and ensuring our future generations get to enjoy these wonderful creatures too.
