When we were undergoing severe crisis conditions in World War 2 Winston Churchill and King George VI called for National days of prayer for our nation. We won that war, although at times the odds were stacked against us at many times.

To my knowledge we have not had a National Day of Prayer since. In the USA, where we helped plant Christianity, they have a National Day of Prayer every year. As a committed Christian I and many others believe it is time for us to do likewise, with the many insoluble problems we face.

In addition to this, it would bring people together in the UK in solidarity and confront the problems that we are constantly reminded "we are in together" and seek the God of all wisdom (not Allah!) to grant us His wisdom to tackle the problems fairly and equitably.

It would also turn us back to our cultural and religious roots and stem the growing tide of Islamization and which is subtly moving us away from our Christian geritage. I am not anti-Islam, but Britain is a Christian country where we have an Established Church, of which Her Majesty the Queen is Governor, Christian Bishops in the House of Lords and even sometimes base aspects of our legal system on the 10 commandments.

If we visit or repatriate to an Islamic country we are often not free to practice our Christian religion in public. However, we grant them the right to do so here, as a tolerant nation, which is good. If we have no distinct Christian identity here, over time they would, I fear over-ride that tolerance as nature abhors a vacuum.

We, the undersigned, call on the Prime Minister and Government to establish a National Annual Day of Prayer for the needs of our country in these difficult times. The USA have this freedom and privilege, probably originally bequeathed to them by us.

As a Christian country with an established Church and HM the Queen as Governor of the Church of England and Christian Bishops playing an active part in out Upper House we should be more pro-active in maintaining our Christian heritage for which many fought and gave their lives in previous generations.

This would not be an offence to those of other faiths who have freedom to practice their own beliefs in our tolerant society, and we certainly have nothing to be ashamed unless we turn our backs on God, who rescued us as a result of our last National Prayer days in WW2.
