The rights of Facebook member Mimi Maciel have been repeatedly violated by Facebook throughout the course of this week.

On Wednesday, July 15, 2015, Mimi received notification that several of her posts had been removed by Facebook, with the automated message, "We removed the post below because it doesn't follow the Facebook Community Standards."

In the ensuing days, Mimi was restricted from full access to her account. Not only did she need to confirm her identity (multiple times?) before logging in, but she could no longer post on her own personal wall nor that of the Wellesley Alumnae Facebook group, of which she has been an invaluable member.

We, the undersigned, call on Facebook to issue a formal apology to Mimi and reinstate full access to her account. The consensus of those who have signed the following petition is that Mimi's posts do in fact align with Facebook Community Standards and, moreover, the actions taken by Facebook to restrict Mimi's access to her account is a direct and indiscriminate violation of her rights.

Within the Wellesley Alumnae Facebook group, Mimi has always been an active participant in the ongoing and important work of anti-oppression. Her voice has been powerful and necessary in the dismantling of racism, classicism, transphobia, etc., both within Facebook as well as society at large. Mimi's freedom of speech and her wise and courage use of it has helped to shape our online community into one that, every day, a bit more safe and more accessible to all alumnae, including those who have traditionally been marginalized.

We would like to explicitly express our commitment to Facebook Community Standards, including the part that states, '"Because of the diversity of our global community, please keep in mind that something that may be disagreeable or disturbing to you may not violate our Community Standards." In a similar vein, something that Mimi has said may be disagreeable or disturbing to others but may not, in fact, violate Facebook Community Standards.

We urge you to look into this matter, with more care and thoroughness.

We look forward to your response, with hopes that it will not only be swift but, also, congruent with the organization's commitment to help keep people safe from bullying and harassment.
