Public education contract negotiations are always accompanied with 'he said, she said' media wars between education unions, government and school boards. None of these groups are adequately representing the public in a system owned by the public.
These negotiations and the many months that are spent on them have a great effect on the public, families and our children. We have the right to know what really goes on in these discussions. Even union members are only privy to their union leaders' opinions on the discussions and have no other first hand information to base their own opinions on.
All sides of these debates claim that they don't want to negotiate in the media, yet they all do, in such a way that the public only hears about biased attacks recounted by those who are invited to attend. THEY MUST negotiate in situations where exact minutes or video recordings of proceedings are available for public viewing online.
There is no reason for one of our most important public systems to be negotiated in secret like a corporate merger. MAKE OUR PUBLIC EDUCATION NEGOTIATIONS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
**This petition is a necessary first step in a process towards public education transparency and reform.**
We, the undersigned, insist that a recording of public education negotiations be made available to the public, live or immediately following meetings. NO MORE, "He said, she said" in public education negotiations!
The PUBLIC education system belongs to the PUBLIC.
