The Mackay Regional Council Pound, is quickly becoming known all over Qld, as a non-caring pound, who has one of the highest euthanasia rates in the state.

We dont accept that this should be a death row sentence, We want MRCouncil to provide better conditions for dogs and cats whilst in their care at the Pound. They do not accept donations of bedding for the animals, as they do not have the ability to wash it, therefore, dogs are kept in a kennel with a bare cement floor, and a small cold metal bench to hop up on, and a water bowl, and cats, a bare cage floor, with just a litter tray and water bowl.

This is not acceptable. Cold winter nights are seeing animals of all ages, kept in these appauling conditions. No toys or recreation is provided for these animals who are locked in this small area for the entire time they are there. It's proven that stress levels of being locked up like this, can cause animals to become "cage crazy". Little or no attention given to them, breaks their spirit. None of this is humane or acceptable.

Staffing levels are too low, meaning the pound is operating inefficiently, and not to full capacity. More animals should be getting re-homed rather than being euthanised, as they are now, twice a week.
Operating hours need to be extended to allow more potential adopters to view the pound pets.
2 hours a day 5 days a week is not adequate.

The website needs to be kept updated and photo's posted daily to allow those viewing the website during out of hours times, to either find their lost pet, or access relevant information and photo's in the case of wanting to adopt.

Offers of voluntary help are being ignored and we would like to see these offers being accepted or more staff provided, which in turn will make the operations of the pound more efficient, and the chances of the animals finding a new home, more possible.

The council is not responsible for the animals ending up in there initially, but they ARE responsible for the conditions that they provide for their care, and for the opportunities that they promote, to give them every chance possible of being rehomed - rather than put to sleep.

We, the undersigned, call on the Mackay Regional Council to take the following action to see the Mackay Regional Council Pound run more efficiently.

Bedding provided for all animals during their time there. The BARE minimum, or bare nothing, is not acceptable nor is it humane. Forcing these animals to lay on bare floors, is not providing sufficient care.

We want pound viewing/operating hours extended to allow more potential adopters to view the pound pets. 2 hours a day 5 days a week is not adequate.

We want to see the website kept up to date and photo's posted daily to allow those viewing the website to find their lost pet, or for potential adopters to access relevant information about currently impounded dogs and cats needing homes.

We would like to see Mackay Regional Council accepting offers of voluntary help at the pound which would see it operating more efficiently and effectively.

No longer do we accept Mackay Regional Council Pound as a Death Row. We want action to make these changes, to give more hope to the animals who end up there. They deserve a second chance.

We call on you to take immediate action, to see more efficient and humane procedures put in place addressing these points.
