Target: Obama, U.S. Senate, State legislation
Background (Preamble):
- The legal drinking age in the United States is among the highest in the world.

- It is the result of the Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act of 1984 which makes it illegal for people under 21 to consume alcohol.

- Many states chose to follow the Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act of 1984 because otherwise their highway funds would be reduced.

- Males are required to join the Selective Service once they are 18, with the possibility of being drafted.

- Also, 18 year olds can vote and participate in jury duty.

- The drinking age of 21 is not effective. It gives colleges more problems to deal with because many young adults drink anyway, disregarding the legal age.

- Many people have created a path for their lives by the time they are 21. It is unacceptable to tell someone not to drink at that age when s/he has gone to war or has started a family.
Petition:
If 18 year olds can take on adult responsibilities such as voting, going to war, and performing jury duty, why are they considered to be minors when it comes to drinking?

Is it a question of state taxation rather than state prohibition?

We, the undersigned, ask for the legal drinking age in the United States to be lowered to 18.
