On June 8, 2014 a massive fire broke out due to the negligence of an individual for "unattended cooking". As a result, 17 other families lost their homes and one 10 year old lost their life (which happens to be my son).

The fire itself caused the entire roof to burn almost instantly.

When the Fire Department made it's statement, the building could not be held responsible because "it was in code for the year it was built" (which was in the late 1950s).

Now, what I propose, is that landlords and/or building owners are responsible to keep their buildings up to code. I understand that if they keep having to do this it would cost them a fortune, but maybe make it mandatory every 25 years or so with an inspection to follow.

By doing this, I feel, tenants will feel a lot safer in their own residences and increase the chance of this not happening again.

Thank You for your time.

We, the undersigned, agree with this proposal and being a tenant in the past, present, or future would in fact feel safer if this were to occur.

Make older buildings code compliant.
