With all efforts to enact common sense gun control in the United States of America mired by special interest funding, false readings of the 2nd Amendment and an intractable congress, we understand the incredible challenges that confront any level of sensible gun control legislation.
However, the time has come for action, and we, the signers of petition, say LET’S START SMALL, and put all of our effort into outlawing JUST ONE TYPE of gun, the Bushmaster .223, used to murder 20 students and 6 teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The Bushamster .223 (SIG 556) is a semi-automatic precision assault rifle, capable of firing 700 rounds per minute from a range of up to 100 yards. It is not a hunting rifle, it is designed for warfare. And it should NOT be legal to purchase by anyone who wants one in the United States.
People who advocate against gun control frame it as a rights issue, but the 2nd Amendment was NEVER intended to grant such broad powers. Written in 1791, the 2nd Amendment specifically related to the organization of militias and the right to bear ‘muskets’.
As an American citizen, my security is jeopardized by the legality of the Bushmaster .223. My RIGHT to feel safe dropping my kids off to school, walking into a mall or going to see a movie is VIOLATED by the availability of these weapons, and I demand action be taken to curb their sale immediately.
We, the undersigned, call on representatives of the US government to change course on gun control, and immediately ban just ONE GUN--the Bushmaster .223 -- from all non-military and non-police use in the United States of America.
