Walking for people with disabilities is made easier with new technology. I use a Segway in order to minimize overuse of my deteriorating knees. My doctor wanted to do full knee replacements years ago, but, I have been successfully holding it off. Biking, skating and excessive walking (especially on stairs) are damaging and painful for me, but I am not a candidate for a wheelchair. I am harassed and threatened with tickets in the city and in the parks because it is illegal to operate a Segway (or electric scooter) in a municipality of 1 million or more or in State parks. Since the advent of hoverboard toys (which are not useful for the same, since their wheels are too small) the city has become more strict. NYC is my home. I know others like me who would also benefit from new technology, but do not dare since it is illegal. I am fervent about being both green and thrifty and do not want to always have to use a gas burning vehicle. Please join me in petitioning the mayor's office to reconsider the use of Segways in NYC. Over the last 15 years, they have proven to be safe and effective. What good are new inventions that help people with disabilities if progress is stifled by bureaucracy.

We, the undersigned, in order to create a city that is more fair for people with disabilities, call on The Department of Transportation, The Department of Alternative Transportation and the State of New York to reconsider VAT- Vehicle & Traffic Title 7 - Rules of the Road, Article 34-C- (1270 - 1277) Operation of Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (2014) in order to allow them to operate legally in a municipality of more than 1million people and in state parks.
