SAMI Apartments

United States of America

SAMI started out in February 1989 with merely 150 apartments under their management. They have always prided themselves on "responding to the changing needs of students."

Now SAMI owns nearly 1,000 different student housing locations around the Illinois State University and Heartland Community College campuses. SAMI is now spreading themselves thin. On SAMI's website they boast about their student housing locations having extravagant amenities such as pools, nice furniture, and even flat screen TV's in some locations. But they are failing to upkeep simple facilities such as proper plumbing, working heating and air conditioning, and carbon monoxide detectors with batteries in them.

SAMI also claims to have their own full service maintenance company, but the average time it takes them to respond to a maintenance request is over a week. SAMI is sacrificing quality for quantity, the number of housing locations they manage has grown, but none of them are up to standard.

College students do not have the funds to be spending thousands of dollars a month to ensure they are getting student housing that meets basic safety requirements. But at this point, that is what it would take.

We the undersigned propose that SAMI raise the standard of living in their student housing, without raising the price of living in their student housing to something unfeasible for students.

We advise an open house held by SAMI where all renters would be welcomed to voice their concerns regarding the SAMI location they are currently living in. From there SAMI will have a better idea of specific issues to address as stated by the renters.

The results of our survey showed; they should begin by raising the standards of safety in their locations, responding to maintenance requests faster, and start communicating with their renters more often.
