Following an approach from Supermarket Chains.

The South Australian Government has proposed changes be made to the Liquor Licensing Act 1997.

The proposal in the first instance will allow the sale of bottled wine in supermarkets with a minimum floor space of 400 sq meters.

South Australia already has the highest number of licensed premises per head of population in Australia. This proposal could result in up to 300 more liquor outlets. Easier access to alcohol in less regulated circumstances will only exacerbate alcohol related problems.

The Skirting of the “need” requirement, a fundamental eligibility criterion, when applying for a Liquor license eliminates a level playing field. The Licenses will be granted at no cost. Even the Big two supermarket chains have in the past abided by the Licensing Act and purchased licenses.

The proposal if accepted will crush small independent retail bottle shops under the weight of the Supermarket Giants. The range, choice, and knowledgeable service of Your local liquor store will be eliminated. Fight the Power.

Thank You for your support.

To the Honourable the President and Members of the Legislative Council in this present Parliament assembled –

We the Undersigned residents of South Australia oppose the legislation that would enable wine to be sold in Supermarkets in South Australia and the draft Liquor Licensing (Sale of Wine in Supermarkets) Amendment Bill 2013.

Your petitioners therefore request that your Honourable House will urge the Government to take immediate action to reject the Proposal to allow the sale of wine in supermarkets in South Australia and allow the liquor industry to develop in a way consistent with the needs and aspirations of the community.
