Whilst Sydney inner west 'Iron Cove Bridge' reconstruction has been a controversial issue for the local community here in Rozelle, a glimmer of hope however exists for one positive outcome from this construction for this community in the guise of a pontoon, for access to the waterway locally.

As part of the current construction at the Iron Cove Bridge a pontoon was recently installed for the purposes of facilitating access to the water for workers constructing the pylons. It is this pontoon that the community now wishes to remain in situ once the bridge construction is completed, thus providing access to the waterway.

To date this community has no public access to the water for recreational enjoyment, in fact the nearest public access to the water is located some 2 kilometres away, next to the Le Montage Function Centre which is next to Leichhardt Swimming and Leisure Centre.

Presently, a community petition asking the authorities to retain the pontoon is gaining momentum, already with over 170 signatures from this small community of dwellings impacted by the construction. Clearly this community is happy to put their support behind the retention of this pontoon.

Retaining this pontoon would be consistent with the NSW Planning agenda under the Sharing Sydney Harbour Access Program which has the aim “to improve public access to and enhance the recreational enjoyment of Sydney Harbour and its tributaries for the people of Sydney and its visitors”.

We the undersigned, call upon Verity Firth the Local Member for Balmain to advocate and have this pontoon maintained for the neighbourhood of Rozelle to provide them access to the local waterway.
