South Gippsland Shire Council has recently released its draft strategy for managing its Aquatic Facilities ie swimming pools, for public comment.

The strategy proposes that significant funds will be spent improving the indoor facilities at SPLASH in Leongatha and that 2 of the 5 outdoor pools in the Shire will received preferential treatment.

It is proposed that the pools in Toora and Korumburra will have Master Plans developed and capital improvements will be funded by the council. Any improvements to the pools in Foster, Poowong and Mirboo North will need to have all the funds raised by the local community.

We question why the rates paid by the residents who wish to use these 3 pools is considered to be of lesser value to the Shire than rates paid by other members of the South Gippsland community.

To the Councillors of South Gippsland Shire Council.

We, the undersigned, do hereby declare that we consider the treatment of the 3 of the Shire’s 5 outdoor swimming pools, in Foster, Poowong and Mirboo North in the Draft Strategic Direction for Aquatic Facilities in South Gippsland, July 2011 (the Draft Strategy) to be inequitable. Furthermore we consider that the Draft Strategy does not consider the social benefits provided by these pools and that community support for these swimming pools has not been adequately taken into consideration in the development of this strategy.

We the undersigned do hereby request that the Draft Strategy not be adopted by Council in its current format and that it be amended to replace Recommendations 3, 4 + 5 with the following:

That future capital investment, technical assistance and grant applications will be supported at those Shire swimming pools where community support, active in kind work and community fundraising is proven.
