On Friday, August 31st, 2012, Gateway Produce at 1459 Pacific Avenue in Woodland was notified by the City of Woodland that their extension request would not be approved to stay in business through late-October.
Instead, they must remove their agriculture stand by Monday September 10th - just as the variety and volume of crops grown by local and state farmers are becoming most abundant.
I value local farms. Please consider what Gateway Produce's economic impact to Cowlitz and Clark County farmers in an already struggling economy.
Consider also how Southwest Washington's agricultural heritage is enhanced and shared through the ambitions of this produce stand.
I value the economic value that Gateway Produce infuses into our community. By being family-owned and run, supporting farmers from Woodland and it's surrounding region (and beyond). More of our considerable food dollar stays right here in Woodland. As tourists come and go, they and dedicated local consumers have come to know and expect the option that Gateway Produce has to offer.
Further, in keeping with the current trend of federal, state, and local initiatives and motivations to increase fresh food choices, I am thankful for the ability to purchase from this vendor - among others - and appreciate the quality, freshness and nutrition it brings to our family table. By keeping competition alive, and with a diversity of options for our food-buying choices, our selection is more competitive in quality and value, locations (alleviating transportation issues for elderly, disabled, families and others) and dietary preferences and needs. I am grateful for the variety Woodland offers, and would welcome more.
We urge you to extend Gateway Produce's permits, allowing them to continue to do business as the abundance of our local agriculture comes into full swing. Please consider this petition. We all appreciate your time in doing so!
