DATE OF RELEASE: July 28, 2008

Incident: Shooting-Teen in Critical Condition

Abbotsford Police and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) have arrested a teen in connection with a shooting that has left another teen in critical condition.

Just before 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night Abbotsford Police were called to a home in the 4000 block of Brisbane Crt. in response to a male that had been shot. When police arrived they found the teen inside the home suffering from a gun shot wound. The teen was air-lifted to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Investigators worked throughout the weekend in an effort to piece together what happened. The resulting investigation has led to the arrest and charge against a 17-year-old friend of the victim for criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The teen was expected to appear in Abbotsford Provincial Court today.

The shooting is not believed to be connected to gang activity. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

My family and I are forever grateful for all of you who supported this petition.

Update April 8th, 2009
My family met with Crown Counsel today and we are disgusted to learn that the "person" responsible for this crime will NOT be charged. The "person" stated that Jose shot himself that night and we and everyone that knew Jose knows that Jose loved his life and would never have done that to himself.

Jose met this person through school and it's very unfortunate that he chose to hang out with such a person. He had no idea this person was going to end his life that night. We also know that this person purposely hid the weapon after he fired it, did not call for medical aid, and has expressed no remorse for his actions. This person admitted to numerous acquaintances that he made a mistake that night, yet cowardly decided to blame the incident on Jose rather than taking the responsibility for his own actions.
Jose had a wonderful and happy life and loved all his friends and family and this person destroyed so many dreams and hopes for Jose.

My family and I will have to leave this behind and start moving on with our lives. Remembering Jose as the sweet, amazing, and loving Human Being he was. Jose filled our lives with so much joy since the day he was born until the day he departed. He left the house happy and full of love and told us all, that he loved us.

We appreciate the hard work from the IHIT team, Abbotsford Police, Crown Counsel, all the witnesses, and everyone involved in helping us.

Hopefully one day Canada will change their Justice System Laws.
