UPMC has become the best healthcare provider in the world. They have attracted the best doctors and have created the best medical research facilities in the world. The polio vaccine was developed at the University of Pittsburgh. They also provide state of the art genetic testing.
Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, also an affiliate of UPMC has one of the few Neurofibromatosis clinics, for all who suffer from the disease, adult or childlren, in the United States.
The West Penn Allegheny Health systems has been dealing with bankcruptsy for over the past ten years. Before you stepping West Penn Allegheny has recieved bailout money at least twice to keep it from folding. Furthermore, West Penn Allegheny won't make referrals to a UPMC hospital or doctor even if it would be of greater benefit to the patient's health. For example, a West Penn Allegheny patient will never see the Neurofibromatosis clinic, because it is affliated with UPMC, which could be to the detriment of that patient.
Finally, West Penn Allegheny is using some of it new found funds to create a medical school at Temple University, in Philidelphia. This brings into question whether Highmark's acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System is to serve the people of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania.
When you sign this petition you are requesting that Highmark retains an in-network status for it's existing customers, so that the patient can choose who provides the best healthcare without enduring additional costs.
By not cooperating with UPMC to keep your customers in-network, you are punishing those customers who want to seek out better healthcare.
