Current benefit payments do not cover basic living costs and cause unacceptable poverty for benefit dependent families.
Current social welfare policy and legislation is focused on getting those who can work into paid employment and the New Zealand government claims unemployment is being managed and a growing economy will reduce unemployment significantly so it is not necessary to have benefit levels that cannot meet basic needs.
This is a human rights issue as it is a basic human right to have the necessities of life which present benefit levels cannot cover.
We request the New Zealand Parliament to identify the income needed to cover basic living expenses including participation in moderate social activities for people and their families who are dependent on a benefit.
Benefits should then be increased accordingly.
