In New York City there are more than 600000 Bengali (Bangla) speaking habitants who are contributing to the betterment of the City with other community. In the Bangla culture the first day of the Bangla New Year starts in mid-April and usually falls on the 14th day of April.
To celebrate the Bangla New Year -the thousands of years of old tradition - the Bangla Speaking people in USA have to take the day off or celebrate during the previous or following week end.
The merit of this petition is to ask the New York City government to declare April 14th a paid Government Holiday to enable the Bangla Speaking people celebrate the Bangla New Year with family, friends & neighbors.
We, the undersigned, call on the Office of New York City Mayor to declare April 14th a paid Government Holiday for Bengali New Year. This will enable the Bangla Speaking people celebrate the Bangla New Year with family, friends & neighbors.
In addition this will also help build stronger bonding among the people of all walks of life and contribute to social harmony.
