Every semester, students are forced to pay hundreds of dollars for textbooks, and can resell those books only for a small fraction of the original price.

The skyrocketing cost of textbooks is a burden on students, families and professors alike and is a significant barrier to higher education. In a knowledge-based open society, this is unacceptable. Human knowledge belongs to the world and should be globally and freely available to all.

Open Source Textbooks are an ideal solution to this problem. Open Source Textbooks and supporting materials have the same quality and comprehensiveness as traditional textbooks; but can be downloaded and shared online for free, self-printed, or bought in hard copy for as much as 80% below traditional textbook prices. Educators, learners, authors, administrators and policymakers around the world are already involved in open education initiatives.

The scope and availability of open education materials and the number of top universities that have already embraced them continues to grow. It is time for Hudson Valley to fully embrace the future of education.

We the undersigned call on the administration and faculty of Hudson Valley Community College to immediately enact a policy and make all necessary changes to give official preference to Open Source Textbooks for all HVCC classes and to fully support and reward faculty for selecting them.
