Former secretary of the Muslim Student Association of Sharif University Tara Sepehrifar has been sentenced to 7 years in prison and 74 lashes.

The verdict has been issued in absentia and her lawyer has been unaware of the trial. According to the Human Rights House of Iran, she was sentenced to 5 years in prison for conspiracy and gathering against national security, one year for anti-regime activities and one year of imprisonment and 74 lashes for disturbing public order.

She was detained twice after the disputed elections. The Prosecutor’s Office has seized her bail. Tara SepehrifarSepehrifar is currently out of the country.

We the undersigned demand that the international community act decisively to secure the immediate and unconditional reversal of this unjust and politically motivated sentence for student leader Tara Sepehrifar. Any prison sentence for peaceful political and social activism violates both international law and the Iranian constitution.

It is fortunate that this sentence cannot be implemented owing to Ms. Sepehrifar being out of the country. However, it is also outrageous that she be unable to return to her country, her family and friends for fear of such a cruel punishment awaiting her.

We further demand that the international community address the Islamic Republic's barbaric practice of sentencing prisoners to lashing, which is a vicious and cruel form of torture.
