Hamzeh Karami is the manager of the reformist Jomhouriat website and a senior official at the Islamic Azad University. Karami has held positions such as former governor of the city of Varamin and political director general of the president’s office in the governments of Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami.

He was arrested shortly after the rigged presidential of June 2009. Following the post-election unrest, Karami was initially sentenced to sixteen years in prison by the infamous Judge Salavati. His sentence was later reduced to eleven years following appeal.

Forced under interrogation to make false confessions, he later repudiated them as having "no legal value."

We the undersigned demand that the international community bring all presure to bear upon the Islamic Republic of Iran to:

1. Immediately and unconditionally released imprisoned journalist Hamzeh Karami. He is a prisoner of conscience.

2. Repeal both the prison sentence and the charges filed against him, which were clearly trumped up and based solely on his activity as a journalist. As such, they violate both Article 19 of the International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights--to which Iran is a signatory state--as well as Article 24 of the Iranian Constitution.
