Families SA is at breaking point.
Staff are dangerously overworked and under resourced, and hundreds of vacancies in Families SA remain unfilled while children may be at risk.
But despite ongoing pleas for more staff and resources, the Department is failing to address these issues in any meaningful way.
The Minister for Education and Child Development, the Hon Susan Close MP, is ultimately responsible and accountable for the actions of her Department.
Given the Department seems unwilling to take any urgent action to address serious staffing and workload issues, the only choice is to urge the Minister to intervene before it is too late.
Enough is enough. If the Department won't act, the State Government must.
We, the undersigned, call on the Minister for Education and Child Development (DECD) to urgently intervene and tell her Department to immediately:
- Provide staffing support within Families SA
- Cease the replacement of social workers with non-social work staff
- Convert temporary staff to ongoing
- Commit to developing a practical and tangible plan for the recruitment of the estimated 200 full-time vacancies in Families SA, in consultation with staff and unions.
