Burton Street was one of the first neighborhoods to be subdivided. Founded in 1912 by civic leader E.W Pearson who knocked down racial barriers by starting the first business league for African Americans, the Asheville bracnh of NAACP, and was a mediator during times of Racial tension. He also founded a Semi pro baseball team. ''Asheville Giants" who played on a field in the community.

Pearson's most renowned Accomplishment was founding the Annual buncombe county and district colored agricultural fair. witch was one of the largest black agricultural fairs in the southwest. To honor Pearson ans his achievements a mural has ben painted on the back of the Burton street center. If this information attest to the fact that the mural should stay.
