A four-and-a-half-year-old LKG student of Darul Huda English Medium School near Nadapuram town was sexually abused allegedly by senior students of the school.

The assault, which happened on October 30, came to light on November 9 after the girl was taken to a doctor when she developed uneasiness and pain. Police on Tuesday said the doctor who examined the girl confirmed she had been sexually abused. The girl reportedly told the doctor that senior students of the school took her to the bathroom and assaulted her on October 30.

Police have registered a case for rape and also taken into custody a few senior students for interrogation.

The relatives of the girl alleged the school management had offered them money to hush up the case.

Residents and various political organizations protested outside the school on Tuesday. When the school authorities tried to videograph the agitators it provoked them. But the large posse of police, deployed in front of the school, kept the protesters at bay.

Various organizations took out a march to the school. The school management alleged it was a move to malign the institution. The school is run by the Sunni group led by Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar.

Succumbing to public pressure, police on Saturday arrested two inmates of the Sirajul Huda dars (religious school) on charges of allegedly raping a LKG student of the Darul Huda English Medium School at Parakkadavu on October 30.

Those arrested have been identified as Shamsudeen (18) of Thalassery and Mubasheer (19) of Panur. The girl had identified the two accused in an identification parade. A third student, who was also in custody, is likely to be let off as his role in the incident has not been proved.

Their arrest was recorded after the girl failed to identify Muneer, bus cleaner, whom the police had presented as `the real culprit'. TOI had reported on the blatant bid to sabotage the case bowing to political interests that had sparked off protests in the Nadapuram area.

The girl's statement was recorded again by the the Payyoli munsiff court after the protests. The relatives of the girl also stuck to their demand for arresting the youth, who had been identified by the child.

Ironically, police, who had claimed that Muneer had confessed to the crime, said on Saturday that the arrested youths Shamsudeen and Mubasheer took the girl to a room near the kitchen of the orphanage after offering her sweets. Both fled the scene when the girl started screaming.

The school management, however, maintained Shamsudeen and Mubasheer were innocent and tried to tarnish the victim and the family. General secretary of Sirajul Huda Educational Complex Perode Abdurehman Saqafi lead these kind of attack and tried to threaten the family over the phone and through mediators.

Molesting a child is unpardonable. That some of the offenders were juveniles makes it complicated but no less condonable. In fact, it becomes all the more important that the real perpetrators be identified and subject - both punitively and remedially - to due process of law.

We need a stringent action against threats by General secretary of Sirajul Huda Educational Complex Perode Abdurehman Saqafi and his followers and the managing committee. And the involvement of the above sad people in washing the evidences also investigated.

Some of the school staff and staff management was aware of this incident and they tried to hide it from the parents of victim. They washed the child using Dettol and soap. Involvement of Darul Huda management should be investigated and the baby sitter, school manager and teacher should be investigated and interrogated.

The investigation team should be lead by an women IG rank officer. The police, despite their protestations to the contrary, are indulging in a shameful cover-up. What is worse, the search is on for scapegoats, a perversion of justice that would have succeeded but for an aggrieved public's intervention.
