The situation above is one of the common accidents that happen because of the elevation of manhole covers. In the article, the motorcycle hit a manhole and the family fell off the bike, the wife fell down and got run over by a bus. Sometimes driving over the manhole at full speed causes the cover to fly out and could possibly lead to injuring people.

This is even harder when the roads are flooded because you do not know where the manhole covers are. If cars try to avoid these manholes, they end up swerving into opposing traffic causing traffic to slow down considerably. Children might not notice manholes without covers and they might fall in.

We believe that proper communication between the sewage and road departments could make the manhole covers flush or flat with the road surface.

We are writing to you as concerned residents of Chennai. This year we have been discussing traffic in the city and how it affects our daily life.

We noticed that a very common problem are the manholes on the road and how they are either placed a few inches below, or above the road surface. We thought that the road and sewage departments are not communicating the way they should. To make the roads safer, we request that these two departments work together while building infrastructure. Through better communication and planning between the departments, these dangerous situation can be solved.

We recommend that the sewage and road departments coordinate their projects so that the height of the manhole covers is flush with the road top. It does not take a lot of effort or money to make this happen.

We believe this will make a safer driving environment for drivers and pedestrians. Manhole covers that are too high or low cause motorcycle drivers to be in danger. It can lead to car wrecks and efficient traffic.
