There was a case in Kissimmee, FL where a 10 year old autistic boy, named Ryan, was cuffed and thrown on top of a police car for "acting out" in class.
Ryan had a bad meltdown which resulted in his violent state, and the principle called the police to have him Baker Acted. It really tears my heart to see children like this mistreated because of ignorant people.
The Baker Act gives the involuntary institutionalization and examination to judges, law officials, or mental health professionals. Ryan was going to be taken away from his parents and placed into state custody due to displaying autistic behavior.
We, the undersigned, call on the Autism Society to put an end to the abuse of autistic children.
