Yesterday (Saturday 29th November) a cyclist hit my car as I was turning into a petrol station on Leigham Court Road in Streatham. The cyclist said he saw my car but chose not to stop and continued on to the point that he actually rolled on to the top of the bonnet of my car.

My first and initial reaction was to jump out of the car to check he was not hurt. He fortunately was fine but extremely confrontational and angry. Shouting, I was in the wrong as I should have seen him! Luckily for me a woman pulled over in her car as had witnessed the accident and kindly helped to mediate the situation (as I also had my young son in the car who I had forgotten about in the midst of dealing with the accident).

We were both shocked at the accident and my son was crying as I braked suddenly he said his neck was sore. After getting him a drink and calm him down he was alright thank god! Afterwards I was offered both personal contact numbers of 2 witnesses incase the cyclist wants to take it further. I am upset as his bike came straight into my car and he was really lucky he wasn't seriously injured as I was turning into the road slowly. I have got damage to my car from the collision of his bike hitting my car, that I now have to pay for, as cyclists have no cover insurance and he made me feel and said I was in the wrong! Whereas if it was 2 cars it would have been a case of exchanging details.

This has to be addressed, as a part of me felt he did it on purpose to make a claim for injury. I have no idea what he was thinking but in all my 15 years of driving experience have I ever had anyone make contact with my car.
Protect cyclists by providing them with road insurance, they are after all vulnerable and more open to accidents than motorists.

Also I feel there should be a licence to be on the road. As a cyclist you should have proper cycling proficiency lessons as this particular cyclist came out of no where and the witness said he came up on to the pavement right near my car. I'm just glad he wasn't hurt but I feel annoid that I should now have to drive with a big hole in my car until I can afford to get it fixed!

Both of the witnesses said he was at fault and should have stopped. I'm sure the petrol garage may have CCTV footage that I may be able to get if he does pursue it. He was more worried about his bicycle and again he was lucky he wasn't seriously hurt.

Please sign this petition! Cyclists need to be insured to cycle!

I feel its now come to the point that there are so many cyclists as well as cars on the road that it is unlawful for cyclists not to be protected in the case of an accident.

The motorist is not protected in this instance and it angers me that my accident was not my fault and the cyclist saw my car and chose not to slow down and as he did came straight into my car! 2 witnesses came forward to state that he was in the wrong.

Unbelievable that he just didn't or couldn't stop in time! I know that cars are faster than cyclists but he was on top of my car! It was awful and upsetting. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Please sign to protect motorists and to appeal for the right to claim on a cyclists insurance the same you would another vehicle. Protecting motorists rights and cyclists which are ultimately more vulnerable and open to getting hurt. It really is a no-brainer!
