There has been at least one elderly NSW pedestrian killed by a bicycle rider on a non-shared footpath who fled the scene and was only able to be identified because it occurred in a very small NSW country town where witnesses knew him.

Imagine what chance you would have if knocked down by an absconding bike rider in Newtown (as happened to a friend who is still paying for physiotherapy) where the amount of people riding on the footpaths has increased dramatically just over the last year.

Exercise is important and the majority of people have no quarrel with responsible, polite bicycle riders. However, because of the ever increasing number of adult cyclists riding illegally, very often at speed, on non-shared footpaths and through pedestrian crossings (and quite frequently also behaving arrogantly and irresponsibly on roads) it should be compulsory for adult bicycle riders to be licensed and to be required to prominently display this identification.

At present there is no comeback for pedestrians knocked down if a bicycle rider fails to stop. This would also help with the cost of installation and upkeep of existing and new bicycle paths.

The Compulsory Licensing of Bicycle Riders petition to The NSW Minister for Roads and Maritime was written by Essie Luckett and is in the category Civil Rights at GoPetition.
