The Central Playground baseball field, the only full-size baseball field in the City of Orange Township, is over 100 years old and has deteriorated beyond playable safety standards. If you haven’t seen the Central Baseball field lately, ride by and take a look!

In addition to the non-functional, dilapidated bathrooms, players risk injury resulting from baseballs taking unconventional hops caused by holes and divits throughout the infield and outfield.

In fact, over the years, several players had to be taken to the hospital after being hit in the face, chest, etc., from misplaying the direction of hard hit balls caused by the aforementioned field conditions. Orange teams at all levels continue to have scheduling problems as opposing teams refused to play on this unsafe field. And recently, while sprinting to catch a fly ball during a high school game an outfielder stepped into one of the many holes went down and had to have surgery on his knee.

Additionally, the lights at Central are in horrible condition. Many of them can no longer be adjusted to shine on the field because the brackets that hold them are old and broken. And there was one incident where a set of lights came crashing down on to the track during school time when kids were having outdoor gym. It was very fortunate that no one was under the lights at that time as it could have been fatal had someone been hit.

It’s time for the City of Orange Township to do what is right and provide our community with a durable, modern full-size baseball field that can support Orange baseball for years to come.
