Johannesburg - The incumbent new commander of the Durban Light Infantry is being prosecuted because he allegedly wore a fellow soldier's medals at an official parade, Beeld reported on Monday.

Lieutenant –Colonel Sibusiso Amos Mbuyazi, 42, reportedly wore the unit's deceased's chaplain's Southern Cross and Pro Patria medals and his John Chard Decoration for impeccable, continuous service (30 years), when he received his rank at a Pretoria parade on 22 August.

The medals were allegedly stolen from the unit's display cabinet in May, and stolen for a second time after Mbuyazi wore them in August.

Johannesburg - The incumbent commander of the Durban Light Infantry (DLI) has been charged because he allegedly wore a fellow soldier's medals at an official parade, Beeld reported on Monday 1 October 2012.

Lieutenant –Colonel Sibusiso Amos Mbuyazi, 42, reportedly wore the unit's deceased's chaplain's Southern Cross, Military Merit Medal and Pro Patria medals; and his John Chard Decoration and Clasp for impeccable, continuous service (30 years), when he received his promotion at a parade in Pretoria on 22 August.

The medals were allegedly stolen from the unit in May 2012, and were not reported stolen but are 'missing' for a second time after Lt Col Mbuyazi wore them.

The numbers on the medals correspond to those awarded to chaplain Patrick Montgomery, whose family donated them to the unit for safekeeping after his recent death.

When Mbuyazi was confronted about the medals a few days after he wore them, he reportedly said he had "borrowed them from a friend", who has not come forward at this time.

Subsequent allegations of 'being framed' and a smokescreen of rhetoric have been made to the press, reported in the Mercury. 2 October 2012.

The significance of medals is as follows;
Southern Cross Medal (SM) - 2nd Type (1975-2003) — for exceptionally meritorious service and particular devotion to duty by officers (who had already been awarded the Military Merit Medal)
Military Merit Medal (MMM) (1974-2003) — for service of a high standard • originally (1974-93) called the C SADF Commendation Medal
Pro Patria Medal (1974) — for operational service (minimum 55 days) in defence of SA or in the prevention or suppression of terrorism • issued for the Border War (counter-insurgency operations in South West Africa 1966-89) and for campaigns in Angola (1975-76 and 1987-88)
John Chard Decoration (JCD) (1952-2003) — for 20 years efficient service in the Conventional Reserve (Note. not Regulars) named after a 19th century British war hero. The Clasp is for 30 years service. A significant period of service in any army.

We the undersigned wish the State President of South Africa, to take action in this matter, that has not only brought one of South Africa's oldest Regiments, and the whole of the South African National Defence Force into disrepute.
