Whereas the current quality of level of public transportation services provided by CARTA and Tri County Link in the SC Lowcountry are not adequate because these agencies do not serve many areas with a frequency of service and service on nights and weekends adequate to allow a rider trying to reach employment, healthcare or education to rely upon them, and further
Whereas the load of private vehicles on our road will soon reach gridlock, strangling economic growth and reducing our quality of life, while forcing approximately 10% of people working in our low wage economy to spend unsupportable shares of their limited incomes on automobiles which are either unsafe, unregistered and uninsured, often driven by unlicensed drivers, and further
Whereas a comprehensive, efficient regional transit system, including a bus rapid transit system which can link local and neighborhood components with an efficient, high capacity backbone linking Summerville, North Charleston and Charleston could liberate the Lowcountry from its oppressive and dysfunctionaly addictive dependence on the automobile.
We the undersigned resolve that local Governments should propose and we would vote to approve a referendum to fund and build a Bus Rapid Transit system linking Summerville, N. Charleston and Charleston with frequent, fast and reliable transit services including a service on nights and weekends which will be linked to improved local services connecting West Ashley, James Island, Mount Pleasant, the beaches and other areas supported by additional funding for regular vehicle replacement and adequate levels of service for the November 2016 general election.
