Litter, debris, and garbage lined along our city streets and sidewalks do not have to be an accepted part of living in our neighborhoods! But day after day, there is litter and garabage strewn along a stretch of Bruen Street that never seems to be cleaned up.

However, City of Newark Ordinance 15:9-1 adopted by the Municipal Council, REQUIRES all property owners/merchants to sweep in front of their property/stores as many times as necessary.

One such merchant, Edison Parking, whose property fronts the south/western side of Bruen Street from Hamilton Street to Edison Place near Penn Station, does not seem to be complying with the law as there is always an unnecessary amount of garbage and debris along this sidewalk.

We, the undersigned, as residents and visitors of Bruen Street, Newark, New Jersey, call on the City of Newark and Ironbound Business Improvement District to enforce Newark Municipal Code 15:9-1b against Edison Parking, and if necessary, to assess the requisite fines for non-compliance.

Specifically, the Code requires business merchants to "sweep their sidewalks and an area eighteen (18) inches out from the curb onto the roadway" a minimum of three times a day, including weekends, when open for business. Further, "[s]uch business merchants shall pick up all paper, debris, and litter collected as a result of such sweeping and deposit it into a suitable receptacle."
