The Boer War Memorial Fountain originally installed in 1911, was moved to the Devon Mall around 1980. When the mall was removed in 1998 the fountain was returned to Marsland Hill. This memorial was erected in memory of soldiers killed in the Boer War (1899-1902).

The fountain no longer operates and is infilled with soil and planted with canna lilies. The memorial has a Category A rating in the District Plan and a New Zealand Historic Places 2 category.

As shown in a recent photograph you will see that compared to the former glory of this fountain, it appears to have fallen into a shocking state of disrepair. And as stated by council about it having been infilled with soil and planted with canna lilies? It appears that this seems to not be the case as you can see by the condition of it now with weeds and being seen as it is in its unkempt state, but if so then it has not been properly maintained.

It is very disrespectful considering what this fountain signifies and what it was established as being in honour of. There is growing interest in having the Memorial Fountain relocated back to a central area in the city and restored to its former glory, where it can be admired, enjoyed and respected for its primary intention and it will also hold in high regard its representation to those brave Taranaki Men who fought for and lost their lives in the Boer War from 1899-1902.

Many local New Plymouth people would love to see it centralised and functional as when it was in the Devon Mall it was admired and a well known and recognised Icon, with many people using it as a gathering point for meeting friends, enjoying time out, having a lunch break, or just enjoying it in its fully functioning glory.

To have this once beautiful Iconic Memorial centralised, refurbished and functioning again can only be seen as a sign of respect in honouring its significance of its foundations and to those brave men, thus bringing back the meaningful, respected and well known expression “Lest We Forget”.

We, the undersigned, call on the New Plymouth District Council to:

Give justice, recognition and acknowledgement to the importance of the BOER WAR MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN, by way of relocating it back to a Central City site, to be restored and bought back to its former glory as it once was when located in the Devon Mall.

This Iconic Memorial Fountain is part of Taranaki/New Plymouth history and it deserves to be maintained and admired for what it signifies, therefore its return to central city and full restoration to take place is acknowledgement and justification of its Importance and true Respected Value for those fallen Heroes for whom it lends itself to.
