Target:
Smithfield Residential
Region:
Australia

John Ryan Brenan (1798-1868), subdivided the estate and named it Smithfield after the meat markets of London and Dublin. The project to establish a village around the yards failed, despite this the English and Irish name remained.

Smithfield did become a thriving commercial centre and remains a significant employment centre in South-Western Sydney as part of the Wetherill Park/Yennora industrial precinct.

We have wonderful parks & recreation facilities in this immediate area such as Brenan Park. Brenan Park has a wonderful paved walking track where the local community enjoy doing their daily walk. Football field, Tennis courts. Children’s play area. We have a community shopping centre that accommodates most of the communities needs. Newsagent. Chemist. Delicatessen. Butcher. Liquor store. General store. It attracts visitors to our local restaurant L’lolio & the Gelato Bar. Giotto.

This area should suit and reflect we live. The adoption of a new suburb name will provide residents with a sense of community ownership and awareness of the historical land uses, and to enhance a sense of place and community spirit in this area. It should have a sense of identity and one which is easily recognisable to the area.

Smithfield today is recognised by many as a significant industrial area in South Western sydney.

We, the undersigned, call on Fairfield City Council to consider the need for a section of Smithfield to have a name change. The proposal to have the name changed to Brenan Heights would be most favourable.

The proposed name to Brenan Heights will suit and reflect we live. The name will adopt the historical land uses. It will have its own identity and which is easily recognisable to the area. Everybody knows Brenan Park. It's Green & Clean.
