In February of 2009, a home in Patton Village located on 37th Armor St. was caught on fire due to a cigarette being tossed from the street into the pine straw next to the house. The pine straw is known to be a fire hazard especially in areas of high winds and dry conditions, such as in Georgia.

The occupants of that home were very lucky to have a neighbor that saw the flames and got the family to safety. This is a serious matter and the housing management agreed at the time, concluding that residents were allowed to replace the fire hazard pine straw mulch for regular bark mulch which retains moisture for an extended amount of time.

Unfortunately, they changed their minds, that residents must maintain pine straw mulch in their front yards of 3-4" thick and replace any pine straw mulch removed before terminating their lease with The Villages of Benning. This is not only wasting the time and money of military families that have already switched the mulches, it is endangering the lives of these families.

We, the undersigned, call on The Villages of Benning to eliminate the requirement of replacing the bark mulch with the pine straw mulch.

And further, allowing any future residents to replace their existing pine straw mulch with bark mulch.
