SUPPORT THIS PETITION TO STOP ANIMAL SHELTERS FROM PUTTING HEALTHY, TREATABLE ANIMALS "TO SLEEP"BECAUSE OF TIME AND SPACE CONSIDERATION. STOP STRAYS AND THE OVERPOPULATION BY ILLEGALIZING PUPPY MILLS AND STORE-BREEDING/ MASS BREEDING.

Why?

Only ONE animal in 10 born in the U.S. gets a good home that lasts a lifetime. The average time for an animals stay at a shelter is 5-12 days, if not found a home. Between 4-6 million dogs and cats are put to sleep each year in the U.S. due to over population and being homeless. That means between 11,000-16,000 pets are put to sleep every day and an animal in a shelter is killed every 1.5 seconds.(Not including the numbers that die of starvation, disease, being hit by a car etc.)

Puppy mills are known for killing dogs when no longer profitable. Is this really what animal shelters have turned to? However, we can control the strays and killings of animals by neutering and spaying our pets. If we can do this death rates will go down and many will have a say on not letting animal shelters "put to sleep"healthy, treatable animals. As a result there would be less strays and more homes available for animals.

In vetoing the Anti-Puppy Mill Bill, Gov. Schwarzenegger said, "I am returning Assembly Bill 241 without my signature. This... measure simply goes too far in an attempt to address the serious problem of puppy mills. An arbitrary cap on the number of animals any entity can possess throughout the state will not end unlawful, inhumane breeding practices. Instead this measure has the potential to criminalize the lawful activities of reputable breeders, pet stores, kennels, and charitable organizations engaged in raising service and assistance dogs. For these reasons, I am unable to sign this bill."

The way he thinks it's okay to let this go is terrible because as a whole, pet-stores and everyone who are mass-breeding are attributing to unlawful, inhumane breeding practices. Also, at least one third of animals from mills end up in public shelters, a burden on taxpayers.By limiting the breeding, this bill would have over time reduced animal control costs and the numbers of animals that enter shelters. (This means less deaths and lower taxes if the Anti-Puppy Mill Bill is signed.)
