Improve Auckland Motorcycle Parking

This refers to the designated Motorcycle parking area in the Fanshawe St, Auckland CBD, however it would apply to motorcycle parking in general.

Initially the parking was simply a designated area for motorcycles which seemed to work fine. Then the Auckland Council (AC) decided they could squeeze another demarcated car parking out of the area currently assigned to motorcycle parking and gain another commercially beneficial customer. Fair enough.

The remaining area not suitable for car parking was left as motorcycle parking area. Shortly thereafter the AC it would be a good idea to demarcate areas for each individual motorcycle and place a notification to advise only one motorcycle per space or be prosecuted for invalid parking.

This was done without any consultation or ideas from the people, who consume this service.

Is not the purpose of council to provide facilities and services to the ratepayer?

The net effect was to severely reduce the amount of motorcycles that can park in the designated area and fails in efficiency on many levels, A Harley requires more space that a scooter, motorcycles have different size handlebars, saddlebags, different lean angles to the sidestand, etc, etc.

In addition there are many areas in the car park that are designated as a single bike park but could quite easily accommodate 2 motorcycles, along with other areas next to concrete structural support which are unsuitable for a car, not in the way of pedestrians yet perfect to park another motorcycle.

However council would rather cone these areas off than allow a motorcycle use of the area, very draconian and NOT a public service,

I am currently encountering motorcyclists frustrated with this issue on a daily basis.

This petition serves to bring this issue to the attention of the AC to seek some sensible resolution for all concerned to make more parking available to motorcycles in council carparks.
