Facebook has forced The Poet Darkling to change her nom de plume to her birth name on their site. However, they are allowing the members of the LGBT community to use their stage names.

This is completely discriminatory, and the "rules" should be equally applied or equally dismissed, for everyone, not just one group. The Poet Darkling has been a victim of gross violence and, in fact, holds a permanent restraining order against her attacker.

Furthermore, The Poet Darkling has published three books under her pen name, uses the name in her "real life," has built up a following on Facebook, and has been a user of the site in good standing since 2007.

Additionally, according to law, most states allow you to legally change your name simply through usage. You can choose a name and just start using it in social settings and in your business.

This is a completely legal name change. Facebook should not be allowed to force use of a name that is a danger to The Poet Darkling's liberty, safety, and well-being!

We, the undersigned, call on Facebook to return to The Poet Darkling the freedom to use her good name, the name she has made for herself through hard work and perseverance, the name that her friends, fans, and family all know her by, and the name she feels safe using.
