The United States embargo against Cuba (described in Cuba and Latin America as el bloqueo, Spanish for "the blockade") is a commercial, economic, and financial embargo partially imposed on Cuba in October 1960. It was enacted after Cuba nationalized the properties of United States citizens and corporations and it was strengthened to a near-total embargo since February 7, 1962.

Titled the Cuban Democracy Act, the embargo was codified into law in 1992 with the stated purpose of maintaining sanctions on Cuba so long as the Cuban government continues to refuse to move toward "democratization and greater respect for human rights".

In 1996, Congress passed the Helms-Burton Act, which further restricted United States citizens from doing business in or with Cuba, and mandated restrictions on giving public or private assistance to any successor government in Havana unless and until certain claims against the Cuban government are met. In 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton expanded the trade embargo even further by ending the practice of foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies trading with Cuba. In 2000, Clinton authorized the sale of certain "humanitarian" US products to Cuba.

Dear Mr. President, Sir,

hereby we, the signers of this petition, are protesting against the US-embargo against Cuba, which today still is in effect.

Without any doubt Cuba is a wonderful and peaceful country with marvellous people. Cuba has never started any aggressive action against the US, whilst, and yes, the truth hurts, the US have several times committed aggressive actions against Cuba.

The embargo against Cuba is an anachronistic relic of McCarthyism and "cold war": not just unnecessary, but destructive: this way the US are inhibiting their own economy and trade relations with Cuba. And, last not least, millions of innocent cuban people and children are suffering such a testimony of political absurdity. How long, how long will this go on??

We want cuban children to get a chance to grow up without having to suffer the embargo-caused limitations and disadvantages. For example: the majority of the cuban people cannot get access to the worldwide web because, as a result of the trade embargo, Cuba cannot connect to the fibreoptical cables surrounding the island. This causes a giant lack of information access as well as very limited possibilities of international communication for every cuban citzen as long as Cuba's connections to the internet may only be via satellite due to the prohibition for US companies to trade with Cuba. The result: cuban people are suffering this self-made insult of the intelligence of the US government. Therefore we are calling to you:

Mr. President, tear down this embargo!
