Against forced music in hospitals

Published by Nigel Rodgers on Feb 28, 2007

We, the undersigned, call upon the Department of Health to ban the use, in hospitals and in doctor's waiting rooms, of devices such as televisions, radios and music systems that make any sound that is audible to patients other than the listener using earphones.

In hospital wards and similar areas, most people have no means of
escaping such music, some being literally immobilised in bed.

In waiting rooms, such noise often causes stress and anxiety to people
who are already at their most anxious. Forcing people to suffer in this way as a condition of receiving medical help is unethical.
