Recently I had pierced my nose, knowing the school policy. I figured it would not be a big deal since the teachers and administrators didn't really care about the policy. I was right for the most part.
I have one teacher who insist on sending me to the office for my piercing. The first time I came to school with jewelry in my last period teacher sent me to the office. I refused to take out my jewelry and let the freshly pierced hole close up, I was then sent to ISS, in school suspension. After that day I regularly wear a clear spacer that is not visible. My teacher will randomly ask me if I am wearing my nose stud. I reply that i am not and that I am wearing my spacer. I am then sent to the office were they call my mom and send me home.
I am starting the petition because I feel that the school board should not determine what we as students do to our bodies. We let them dictate what we wear and how we act in school but they should have no say in what we do to our bodies. I urge you to sign this petition for the rights of students today and students yet to come.
We, the undersigned, call upon the Person County School Board to abolish the piercing policy for high school students.
Students should have to right to pierce their facial features if so desired. Please restore this right and let the students of Person High School show their individuality in a safe non-destructive way, by allowing them the freedom to pierce their bodies without the fear of prosecution.
