Short-term rentals are becoming popular in New York City despite the fact that it is illegal.

Companies like Airbnb are campaigning to have the Multiple Dwelling Law changed to allow for short-term rentals without considering the damage that such arrangements can create in the rental and real estate industry.

I am writing this petition to express my support of the New York City government's continued efforts to protect the Multiple Dwelling Law as it exists today against the attempts of companies like Airbnb to change this law so they can profit more from the short-term rental market in the city.

Aside from creating an aggressive campaign with the aim to change the law and to swing public opinion towards the benefits of renting out apartments to tourists on a short-term basis, Airbnb exploits the market by not being open with the fact that it's illegal for a tenant or landlord to rent out their units for less than 30 days. The company has also shown its lack of care towards tenants who got into trouble with housing after renting out their units through the Airbnb service.

The Multiple Dwelling Law exists to protect both landlords and tenants alike so they can live in the city in relative peace and security. Changing the law to allow landlords and tenants to rent out their units on short-term basis creates threats to that peace and security. I am appealing to the New York City Hall to please continue to protect this law and not let the attempts of Airbnb change it towards its own profit-making end.

Respectfully,
