I am petitioning for 2010 to become the official International Year of the Guide, just like the Scouts had 2008.

Read the reasons below, and if you agree with these statements, and believe, like I do, that the Girl Guides deserve this honoured Recognition, please sign your name, state and city at the bottom.

2008 is the Centenary of Australian Scouting and has been declared The Year of the Scout by the Australian Government. 2010 is the Centenary of Guides in Australia and has NOT been declared as the Year of the Guide.

Why?

Scouts Australia is receiving “Commemorative coins” from the Royal Australian Mint for the year 2008. Guides will receive NONE for the year 2010.

Why?

Australia Post issued three Scouts Australia stamps on 19 February 2008 to mark the Centenary of Scouting in Australia, and 2008 - Year of the Scout. Guiding Australia will be issued a total of ZERO stamps in 2010 to mark the Centenary of Guiding Australia, and 2010.

Why?

Scouts all over Australia received a commemorative centenary woggle for their scarves. Guides all over Australia will not be receiving a commemorative woggle for them to wear.

Why?

Scouts Australia is “Proudly Supported by” the Australian Government, receiving from them funding for signage on buses, ads in “prime time” TV and donations for events they will be holding during 2008. Guides Australia has no such funding; they have not even received a “Proudly Supported by” from the Australian Government.

Why?

In its Centenary Year, Australian Scouting is strong with around 60,000 male and female members. Australia today (2008) has almost 34,000 members of the Guide Association. It belongs to a world-wide Guiding family, extending over 140 countries with a membership of more than ten million. All this has developed from an idea conceived by one man, who gave up an important job to put it into practice.

Guides Australia is just as big, considering it only enrols female members.

“Scouts Australia’s aim is to help children and young people achieve their full potential in life. This is done through individualised, fun, adventurous, challenging, leadership and teamwork-oriented programs.”

“Guides Australia provides a non-formal education program that is a dynamic, flexible and values-based training in life skills, decision-making and leadership. It is run by trained volunteer Leaders committed to: Enabling girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community members.”

Looking at the above two statements, I would say that the Scouts and the Guides were alike, very similar, in fact we were founded by the same family way back in 1908 and 1910.

I believe that the Guiding Movement deserves the same attention, the same funding, the same respect and the same honours as its Scouting counterparts.

If you believe that Guides should be awarded 2010 as the Year of the Guide, sign below and pass it on!!

***This was not written by me, and I do not know who it was written by but whoever it was is brilliant

We, the Undersigned, call on the Australian federal and state governments to give the Girl Guides of Australia the same recognition given to the Scouts of Australia thus, 2010 to become the official International Year of the Guide.

The 2010 to become the official International Year of the Guide petition to Australian Government was written by Sinead Flynn and is in the category Youth at GoPetition.
